MOVE premiers to capacity crowd at Celtic Connections

PICTURE GALLERY

Saturday 22nd January saw MOVE performed to an audience of over 1,300 in Glasgow’s 02 ABC, Sauchiehall Street as part of this year’s Celtic Connections Festival.

With a cast including Neil Primrose of Travis on drums and percussion, Salsa Celtica’s Fraser Fifield on sax and Highland Pipes, John Saich of Wild Biscuit, Scotland’s number one Hip Hop crew Random Aspekts and a special line up of Pipers and Drummers from Argyll, this unique production rocked one of Glasgow’s premier venues.

Highlights included compositions from some of the pipers in the cast fused with hip hop and funk with choreography by Tony Mills of Random Aspekts. Home to Eilean Dearg by Chris Cotes (opening the show with a passion akin to that of the late Martyn Bennett), Arthur’s 50th Birthday Bash by Ewan McCulloch, Urban Aspects by David Provan and Somerled’s Legacy by Rod Buchanan all gave the Glasgow audience a taste of some amazing composition work coming from Argyll in the 21st century.

A special surprise was in store for the audience as tenor drummers Ashleigh Kilgour, Bethan Phillips and Maddy Ward showed that their skills go even beyond their unique style of flourishes, setting their drums aside to perform a dance routine with Ashley Jack of Random Aspekts to a country blues setting of Pipers Cave.

A blistering rendition of The Hen’s March followed, a five minute whirlwind played by David Provan with Colin Brown and Fraser Fifield, huge applause erupting as they were joined once again by the tenor drummers with their signature moves. The show closed with a free-styling dance floor rework of piping standards including Lexie MacAskill, with a showcase of world class break dance and full ahead musicianship leaving the Celtic Connections audience wanting more.
